Strathmore School of Tourism and Hospitality

The Centre for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) organized a public lecture on Tourism in Dubai, which took place on 12th November, 2015. The lecture presented by Dr. John Fong, Director of Business Developing and Consulting Associate Professor at the Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management (EAHM), aimed at equipping CTH students with vast information on the opportunities offered in Dubai. Dubai has a humble beginning as it has grown from a fishing village to a great city, now called the Vibrant Dubai; A city of possibilities. The city attributes its vibrant growth to the Emirates Airline.


The Academy, together with CTH, is organizing a study tour to expose CTH students to the opportunities offered in Dubai. Dr. Fong concluded by saying that the ultimate need or the study tour was set to let students visit Dubai, study and get a hold of the many job opportunities available in the Tourism and Hospitality industry.

Dr. Fong highlighted possible work settings in Dubai such as airlines, amusement centers, casinos, consultancy, and travel agents among many. He went ahead to talk about the amazing sites in Dubai such as; Burj Khalifa- the tallest building in the world(828 meters); Dubai Mall- largest mall in the world; artificial islands like the Dubai aquarium; world’s largest Acrylic panel; and Ski Dubai where one can go skiing with penguins. Dr. Fong also talked about Dubai Expo 2020, which is themed; Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.


He also discussed about the blue waters island, Dubai world cup – world’s richest Race meeting worth (USD 10million), Ferrari World- Abu Dhabi, the changing landscape of Dubai. He described Dubai to be less reliant on oil city, but one with a greater reliance on the Hospitality and Tourism industry, encouraging CTH students to take advantage of the opportunities in the city.


The students were introduced to Jumeirah Group which owns The Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management and the 7star hotel; Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai.
