STH has an arrangement with Broadmoor Resort in Colorado for a one year paid work experience in the US. The program targets either final year students or those within one year of graduation from both Hospitality and Tourism courses. The program aims to equip students with top notch training experience in a multi-cultural setting. The training positions are available in Food and Beverage (servers, hosts), Housekeeping, Culinary and Operations (front desk, reservations, and concierge). The trainees are paid the same rates as employees and after one month will make their own accommodation arrangements.
The first cohort of students in this program joined at the end of 2018 and are thrilled so far with the experience gained so far.
My passion in the hospitality industry greatly lies in Guest Relations and that was the position I applied for at the Broadmoor. This was made possible through the J1 internship 1 year programme in the USA offered by Strathmore University School of Tourism and Hospitality.
Through the program, I have learnt a lot of valuable lessons and skills that I will keep with me throughout my professional career. I have polished my leadership skills and interpersonal skills. I now more than before appreciate cultural differences by interacting with other J1 interns all over the world. The exposure has been eye opening and I believe I am ready to utilize these new competencies in the Kenyan Hospitality Industry.
Thanks to the training we received at Strathmore, adjusting to the professional environment was not difficult. I have a new sense of professionalism and a clearer view of what it means to be in the professional world. I am eternally grateful to the Strathmore School of Tourism and Hospitality for this great opportunity that has exposed us to a different hospitality and tourism environment, and experiences!
