Strathmore School of Tourism and Hospitality

For the first time, the EuroCHRIE Board held their spring and autumn board meetings in Africa, hosted by the School of Tourism and Hospitality in Nairobi, Kenya.

The European Federation of the Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (EuroCHRIE), an association of hospitality and tourism educators and industry professionals, recently opened its arms to Africa and the Middle East. The board meetings were held in preparation for its 35th conference on African soil, right in the heart of Nairobi, Kenya on 23rd-25th October 2017. The conference was hosted by three universities: Strathmore University, Saxion University of Applied Sciences Netherlands, and University College of Northern Denmark.

EuroCHRIE promotes global education, research, service, and business in the hospitality and tourism industry. Its mission is to advance knowledge in hospitality and tourism, with the hope of becoming the global leaders in hospitality and tourism education and research.

EuroCHRIE membership categories range from premium, institutional, and individual members. Currently, Strathmore University is the only premium member in Africa, outside South Africa.

The 2017 board meeting was attended by ICHRIE President Prof. Amit Sharma and the Secretary of Asia Pacific CHRIE (APacCHRIE) Prof. Pearl Lin. The meeting was presided by the EuroCHRIE President Anders Justenlund (Denmark) and was attended by Executive Committee officials Ralf Burbach (Ireland), John Fong (USA), and Chrystel Masdupuy (France); Board of Directors Peter Russell (UK), Bill Samenfink (USA), Xander Lub (Netherlands)  and Ed Kastli (USA); and Area Consultants Hjalte Mansa (Denmark) and Joy Goopio (East Africa).

Among other things, the board discussed ways of engaging with African members through hosting symposiums, webinars and local mini-conferences working closely with Area Consultants in Africa.
