Strathmore School of Tourism and Hospitality

The EuroCHRIE University Challenge is an annual competition offered to teams of students from member colleges and universities in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This year was a tight competition among Budapest Business School-Hungary (2017 winner), Stenden University-South Africa, Stenden University-Netherlands, NHTV Breda University-Netherlands (2016 winner), University College of Northern Denmark (2015 winner), Dublin Institute of Technology-Ireland, Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management-Dubai and Strathmore University-Kenya.

The Simulation Challenge is an application of hotel business skills requiring a higher level of understanding, strategic thinking, and tactical precision. Each team of 4 senior students and 1 instructor operate their hotels in real-time and in direct competition with each other by making strategic decisions and implement tactics in each business quarter of their hotel. The winning team goes to the hotel that produces the best Balanced Scorecard with the highest ratings in market performance, profit and returns on equity, guest loyalty, and staff performance.

The winning team for 2018 goes to Ankara Hotel operated by the Strathmore team: Brenda Monica Wairimu, Kirsten Erica Dass, Anneirene Kerubo Muma, Vivian Muthoni Wachira and their instructor, Miss Joy Goopio. A quote from the winners:

When we started this journey, we had so many mixed feelings. It was in the middle of our crazy, final semester, and quite honestly, we were rather apprehensive of the challenge. Being our first-time taking part in the competition, we did not know what to expect from our competitors, the challenge itself and ourselves. All we knew was that we could rely on each other’s strengths and capabilities. In the course of the 6 weeks of the simulation, we got to understand our worthy competitors through their strategies, decisions and constant communication with them. With each quarter, we learned to be proactive, strategic, we learned to consider each other’s opinions and that eventually paid off. We are grateful for the opportunity and the experience!

Congratulations to the winning team! Strathmore University was awarded the plaque during the EuroCHRIE conference in Dublin.

EuroCHRIE is the official federation for Europe, Middle East and Africa of the International Council in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (ICHRIE), the leading professional association that supports education and research in hospitality and tourism.
