The Kenyan Hospitality and Management industry has been adversely affected by the acts of terrorism. It’s with this reason that Naomi Wangari Nyoro a Hospitality Management student from the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) probed the issues in her fourth year project.

Her objective was to determine the effects of terrorism on the revenue of Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), to assess the socioeconomic impacts of terrorism on the MICE industry and to determine the strategies put in place to counter the effects of terrorism on MICE industry. Her findings were of critical value to the national government, county government and policy makers in evaluating the strategies to control the vice of terror in Kenya, which could help to improve the MICE sector.

Visionary, determined, and ambitious are the befitting quality traits that best describe Naomi.  The first born in a family of three children, fought tooth and nail to emerge top in her class. She eagerly looks forward to the upcoming graduation as she will be awarded with a 1st class honours. Her success was primarily founded on integral fundamentals sheer hard work, sacrifice and determination.

In pursuit of fulfilling her dreams and aspirations, Naomi was on the hunt, looking for a suitable institution that would accommodate her academic needs. Naomi’s search for quality and excellence led her to Strathmore University.

‘In the beginning I was not sure whether Strathmore  offered a Hospitality and Tourism Course, even so, I categorically wanted to study there. A friend of mine who was studying ACCA at the university, dispelled the doubts I had – to my delight, he confirmed to me that the institution offered the course. At that point I knew the stage was set for me,’ she says.

The 22 year old rise to academic stardom began in June 2013, she was pursuing a course she envisioned from a young age.

‘From the time when I was in High School, I developed a passion for the hospitality field. There is a time I used to have mini recipe books and newspaper recipe pages, I was so much attached to them and I knew that one day I would pursue something related to that.’ she says.

Every day, it was a race against time for Naomi to prepare adequately for her exams. Attending all her lectures and being attentive in class was vital, but above all – study groups proved to be pivotal in her realization of becoming a top student in her class.

‘From the beginning, my objective was to learn as much as I could and get good grades at the end of the course. In a normal day when I was not in class, I would spend my free time reading and revising. Taking the initiative to form a study group was very critical, they really helped me in memorizing important information when undertaking tests. The passion I had towards hospitality drove me to achieving my goals,’ she comments.

During her four year academic tenure at Strathmore, Naomi passionately engaged in the school’s Hospitality and Tourism (HATTS) club. She was also an active Community Service Centre (CSC) member, as she used to visit and help the less fortunate in the society.

The Hospitality Management specialist in the making aspires to be in a managerial position in her field in the next five to ten years to come.

Congratulations to Naomi on her great achievement.
