The Centre for Tourism and Hospitality students were proudly awarded the International CHIA Recognition, for their exemplary performance in Hotel Industry Analytical Foundations, Hotel Math Fundamentals, Property Level Benchmarking, and Hotel Industry Performance Reports. This came after an exam was administered by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute; prior to the exam students underwent an intensive one-week training. The students achieved 100% pass rate and scored an average grade of 83% where the highest student scored 94% and the lowest was 74%.

The CHIA (Certification in Hotel Industry Analytics) is a leading hotel-related certification for university students graduating from Hospitality and Tourism programs throughout the world. It is being offered globally to undergraduate and graduate students through a joint effort between AHLEI (American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute), ICHRIE (International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education) and the STR SHARE Center (Smith Travel Research, Supporting Hotel-related Academic Research & Education).

Twelve of the graduating students attended the one-week training at Strathmore, where Joy Goopio- Director of Centre for Tourism and Hospitality who is an accredited CHIA trainer assessed the team. Strathmore University, being a member of STR SHARE Centre, is the only institution in East Africa that offers CHIA training to its students.

This recognition provides evidence of thorough knowledge in foundational metrics and definitions that are used by the hotel industry. Recipients have proven that they can “do the math” and interpret the results. They have demonstrated an ability to analyze various types of hotel industry data, make strategic inferences based upon the analysis and have a grasp of the current landscape of the global hotel industry, including relevant current events. Achieving this distinction announces that these students have a place among the best graduates in their profession and opens doors to future career opportunities.

The students received a certificate of accomplishment and are also allowed to use the CHIA designation.
